Overview

Federal Law (Ray Baum's Act, section 506) requires that all VoIP phone systems must provide dispatchable 911 addresses to each phone. Dispatchable addresses must include the street address of the calling party, and should also include additional information such as suite, room number, floor, or other information needed to quickly locate the calling party.

This means that it is no longer acceptable for every phone in your business to have your business address as the sole e911 location.  Due to this law, EVERY phone must be identified with the unique information about that phone's specific location so that emergency responders to quickly locate the calling party.  DakotaPro thus requires dispatchable information for each phone to be maintained by every Customer.

Best Practices

Many small businesses have never taken the time to number their offices they simply refer to "Mary's office".  However, the reality is that over time, Mary may leave your organization and Joe may be the current occupant.  If Joe then calls 911, imagine the emergency responder's confusion (and delay) when they come to the business and ask for Mary's office.

The easiest and best way to setup your system and support your employees is to reference office numbers.  These can be inexpensively implemented and they never change.  DakotaPro thus highly recommends setting up an office-numbering scheme, INCLUDING physical office labels.  DakotaPro will then program that information into the e911 system on your behalf.  When Mary or Joe calls e911, responders will thus be routed to "Office 101".
